Quick answer: Seattle rain is frequent but usually light, so the most useful jacket is one you’ll actually carry: light, packable into its own pocket, with fully taped seams. The four below list their fabric, seam sealing and weight on the maker’s own page, and two list a waterproof rating in millimeters.
Sea-Tac averages 39.34 inches of precipitation a year, but it comes on about 156 days, and only about 93 of those days reach a tenth of an inch [1]. From October through April the airport averages measurable precipitation on 14 to 19 days every month [2].
At a glance
- Sea-Tac average yearly precipitation
- 39.34 inches (1991-2020 normals) [1]
- Days with measurable precipitation
- About 156 a year; about 93 with 0.10 inch or more [1]
- Wettest month
- November: 6.31 inches over about 18 days [2]
- Driest month
- July: 0.60 inch over about 5 days [2]
- Across the state
- Spokane 16.45 in. a year; Quillayute (Olympic coast) 101.32 in. [1]
What Washington’s rain means for a jacket
NOAA’s climate normals show a clear pattern for Seattle: a wet season from October through April, when 14 to 19 days a month have measurable rain, and a dry July and August with fewer than 5 [2]. Winter (December through February) averages 15.26 inches at Sea-Tac, summer (June through August) about 3 [1]. That’s lots of light rain, which favors a light jacket you can keep in a bag every day over a heavy one you leave at home.
The state isn’t uniform. Spokane averages 16.45 inches a year, and Quillayute on the Olympic coast averages 101.32 [1]. If you hike the coast or the Cascades, size up to a jacket with pit zips and a hood that fits over a hat.
How we chose
- Fully seam-taped or seam-sealed, per the maker. Without it, water gets in at the stitching.
- Packable. Each one packs into its own pocket or a stuff sack.
- Specs from the maker. Weight, fabric and, where published, waterproof and breathability ratings come from the brand’s own product page. We don’t list ratings a maker doesn’t publish.
- No recall. We searched the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database for each brand on November 2, 2026 [7].
Our picks
Best for: Day hikers who want the lightest shell to keep in a pack
Outdoor Research Helium UL Jacket
At 5.7 ounces it's the lightest jacket here, it's fully seam taped, and its chest pocket doubles as the stuff sack.
- Toray Dermizax 2.75-layer waterproof membrane; 15-denier nylon ripstop [3]
- Fully seam taped [3]
- 5.7 oz (162 g) [3]
- Adjustable hood with wire brim [3]
Safety check: Outdoor Research's only CPSC recall in the database is for 2009 heated gloves, not jackets (checked 2026-11-02) [7].
Watch out: Outdoor Research says it contains PFAS and can't be shipped to California, New York or Colorado. It doesn't publish a waterproof rating in millimeters, and its own site showed it out of stock.

Best for: Bike commuters
Showers Pass Century Jacket
It has a cycling cut (longer arms, shorter front, drop tail), a published 25,000 mm waterproof rating, and it packs into its own rear pocket.
- 25,000 mm waterproof; 25,000 g/m²/24 hr breathability [4]
- Artex Gold Ultra 2.5-layer fabric; fully seam-sealed [4]
- 250 g (size M) [4]
- PFAS-free, per the maker [4]
Safety check: No CPSC recall found for Showers Pass (checked 2026-11-02) [7].
Watch out: It has no built-in hood; Showers Pass sells a separate accessory hood. The cycling cut is short in front for walking around town.

Best for: Runners and fast hikers who overheat in rain gear
Showers Pass Cloudburst Jacket
It's a 3-layer, fully seam-taped shell with high listed breathability for working hard in the rain, and it packs into its back pocket.
- 3-layer eliteAIR fabric; recycled polyester face and backer [5]
- Fully seam taped [5]
- 9.8 oz (medium) [5]
- Packs into its back pocket [5]
Safety check: No CPSC recall found for Showers Pass (checked 2026-11-02) [7].
Watch out: The maker's page lists two different waterproof ratings (15,000 mm and 10,200 mm) and two breathability numbers, so we don't rely on either. No hood is listed.

Best for: A budget backup for the car, games and festivals
Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Rain Suit (men's)
It's a full jacket-and-pants suit that weighs 12.8 ounces together and comes with a stuff sack, for far less than a technical shell.
- Breathable non-woven fabric; waterproof and wind-resistant, per the maker [6]
- 12.8 oz net weight (jacket and pants) [6]
- Adjustable hood; full zip with storm flap [6]
- Stuff sack included [6]
Safety check: No CPSC recall found for Frogg Toggs (checked 2026-11-02) [7].
Watch out: Frogg Toggs doesn't publish a waterproof rating or say whether the seams are taped, and non-woven fabric is less durable than nylon or polyester shells.

Buying guide
- Pick for how you move. Walkers and hikers want a hood; cyclists want a longer back and arms; runners want breathability.
- Check the seams. “Fully seam taped” or “seam-sealed” on the maker’s page is the minimum for Northwest rain.
- Compare ratings only within what makers publish. Some brands list waterproof ratings in millimeters and breathability in g/m²/24 hr; others don’t. Don’t assume a missing number is a good one.
- Check for PFAS if it matters to you. Some makers now say whether their water repellent treatment uses PFAS [3][4].

Common questions
How much does it rain in Seattle?
Under NOAA's 1991-2020 climate normals, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport averages 39.34 inches of precipitation a year, with measurable precipitation on about 156 days. November is the wettest month, at 6.31 inches over about 18 days.
Is all of Washington that rainy?
No. Spokane averages 16.45 inches a year, while Quillayute on the Olympic coast averages 101.32 inches, by NOAA's 1991-2020 normals.
Do I need a fully waterproof jacket in Seattle?
Seattle's rain comes often but mostly in small amounts: about 156 days a year have measurable precipitation, but only about 93 have a tenth of an inch or more. A light, packable, fully seam-taped shell you'll actually carry suits that pattern.
